Quota refugees
Every year, Denmark receives approx. 500 quota refugees according to an agreement with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The refugees are chosen among millions of people who live in camps outside their country of origin. The criteria for being chosen to be resettled in a different country is that you are under an especially severe threat of persecution or have especially bad chances of ever returning to your country of origin. It is also taken into consideration whether this refugee is likely to be well integrated in Denmark, e.g. by getting a job.
Humanitarian residence permit
After a final rejection by the Immigration Service and the Refugee Appeals Board the majority of asylum seekers will not have further chances of getting a residence permit in Denmark. A limited few, however, receive a humanitarian residence permit, which can be obtained if very special humanitarian circumstances are present. This could be serious life-threatening illness, which cannot be treated in the country of origin or extremely harsh living conditions for single mothers or families with small children from certain areas. The applications for humanitarian residence permits are tried in the Ministry of Refugee, Immigration and Integration Affairs.
Residence permit according to the Danish Aliens Act § 9c, 1
Residence permit according to the Danish Aliens Act § 9c, 1 is granted if there are special reasons present. This could be a strong family attachment to Denmark or a limited attachment to the country of origin, because the applicant has not been there for many years. Applications for residence permits according to the Danish Aliens Act § 9c, 1 are tried by the Danish Immigration Service.
