Rice in Myanmar

No one can help everyone, but everyone can help someone

With these words Rice invites everybody to join a new and exciting project benefiting children in Myanmar. Rice, in co-operation with the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), will build a school in Myanmar to serve some of the hundred of thousand children, who lost their school, when the cyclone caused havoc in the country two years ago.

The Cyclone Took Everything in its Wake
In 2008, on May 2nd and 3rd, when Nargis swept through Myanmar, the cyclone killed people and devastated houses, roads, and pylons on its way. The cyclone is the worst natural catastrophe ever to hit Myanmar, with one million people becoming displaced as a result. 450.000 families lost their homes and their entire livelyhood, 4.000 school were destroyed and three fourths of the infrastructure were ruined.

A Country in Need
Myanmar is one of the world’s most distressed countries, which is why Nargis had such catastrophic consequences. The cyclone only made a bad situation even worse.

Myanmar is still suffering
The reconstruction of Myanmar advances, but there is still a long way to go. Now, the great need in Myanmar only rarely attracts the media's attention, so many don't know that many hundred thousand victims still suffer. Today, two years after the cyclone swept through the country, several thousand people still live in temporary tents and houses without proper sanitary facilities and access to clean water. Many families can still not feed themselves and the state of health is critical in many places.

The Lack of Schools is Huge
Today, two years after the catastrophy, the children in the cyclone-stricken country still have a great need. There is a huge lack of schools, and this means that many children do not attend school. Rice believes that all children have a right to schooling – that learning and education is paramount for a child’s daily life as well as future. That is why Rice will now build a school!

By donating half the profits from the sales of lunch boxes and a series  of melanine products, Rice raises money for building the school.

Rice and the Danish Refugee Council are grateful for all support to the school project. “No one can help everyone, but everyone can help someone”.

The building of the school can be following on www.rice.dk and on this site.
