DRC was one of the first international humanitarian organisations able to provide assistance following the invasion of Iraq in 2003. DRC have also established programs in Syria and Lebanon – countries hosting large numbers of Iraqi and Palestinian refugees.
The Middle East remains one of the worlds political and humanitarian hotspots characterized by local and regional conflicts as well as complex and unresolved problems of refugees and internally displaced. As the region provides a challenging humanitarian environment DRC work closely with UNHCR supporting refugees and internally displaced as well as the surrounding societies.
DRC efforts include projects of Protection, Self-Reliance/Livelihood, shelter & emergency NFI distributions, coordination, construction and capacity-building, community services and education.
With millions of refugees and IDP’s and ongoing political unrest the Middle East represents a serious humanitarian challenge and therefore a key area of concern to the DRC.
