25 years of conflict between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have led to large-scale displacement. In the final phase of the conflict between September 2008 and May 2009 the problem of displacement found a new culmination leading to a temporary change in DRC humanitarian effort from reconstruction and finding durable solutions to emergency aid.

Sri Lanka provides a complex humanitarian challenge and the DRC operation in Sri Lanka combines a variety of humanitarian approaches – emergency  and early recovery response, protection of IDP’s and returnees, integrated livelihood and reconstruction as well as demining and mine education.

DRC began a Community and Family Based Rehabilitation project in Myanmar/Burma in 2010. When cyclone Nargis hit in 2008 killing 85.000 people the humanitarian situation in Myanmar/Burma was already problematic – it is estimated that 500.000 people are internally displaced as a result of government persecution and civil wars between ethnic groups and government troops.
