In order to secure the DRC Stand-by Roster’s future reserve of sufficiently qualified and experienced members, the mentor program aims to build capacity and provide field experience among highly motivated junior candidates with relevant educational and/or professional backgrounds.
Mentor candidates are identified by the DRC Stand-by Roster in a separate applications process once a year. Some apply directly for the mentor programme, while others are offered this option if they do not meet the standard criteria for Roster membership.
Deploying a mentor candidate can happen in two different ways:
- A UN agency identifies a suitable position and advertises for candidates among stand-by partners.
- The stand-by partner (such as DRC) identifies a qualified candidate and contacts a relevant UN organization to request for mentor deployment.
Qualifications for mentor candidates
Mentor candidates should fulfil the following criteria:
- Relevant educational and/or professional background (matching the Stand-by Roster profiles)
- Knowledge of UN and humanitarian work
- Age between 25-35
- High motivation for career in the humanitarian field
- Relevant international experience of some kind
- Availability for deployment within 6 months
- Willingness to accept min. 2 deployments after participation in mentor programme
Mentor deployment
During the deployment the mentor candidate will be supervised and guided by his/her mentor.
The deployment will end with a performance appraisal of the mentor candidate. Based on this evaluation, DRC can choose to offer the person permanent membership of the DRC Stand-by Roster. In other words, a successful performance will lead to standard DRC Stand-by Roster deployments as well as possibility to participate in trainings offered by DRC or UN partners.
