North Ossetia-Alania

DRC’s assistance program in North Ossetia-Alania focuses on two groups of displaced.

The first one consists of forced migrants and refugees from Georgia who fled during the 1991-92 conflict between Georgia and South Ossetia. These refugees, many of them South Ossetians, face problems related to the lack of appropriate permanent housing, employment and legal status.

The second target group is people of Ingush ethnicity displaced during the 1992 Osset-Ingush conflict over Prigorodny district. A large proportion of this group remains resided in temporary accommodation centres (TACs) with little prospect of employment and durable solutions in sight.

DRC is meeting shelter needs through provision of permanent housing solutions as well as temporary ones (box tents) to families returning to Prigorodny.

Shelter is however only a part of a durable solution scenario and support is therefore also provided to mutually reinforcing livelihood activities and infrastructure projects, the latter jointly implemented with relevant authorities.

Furthermore, as in Chechnya and Ingushetia DRC is working with local NGO actors to outlive the long term ambition of promoting peace and stability in the North Caucasus region. This is done through targeted tolerance building activities with effect for ordinary citizen’s life.
