East and Central Africa

Because of complex crossborder conflicts and related refugeeproblems in East and Central Africa the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) have extended its operation in the region since the establishment of a program in Uganda in 1999 – Northern Sudan 2004, Southern Sudan 2005, Central African Republic 2007 and Democatic Republic of Congo as late as 2009.

Forced recruitment of child soldiers and the persecution and killing of civilians has defined the wars and conflicts in East and Central Africa. Large parts of the populations are forced to flee and become internally displaced or take refuge in another country in the region. At the same time poverty, corruption and the lack of opportunities constitute major problems in the region.

DRC is providing both emergency aid and long-term solutions in East and Central Africa. The humanitarian effort includes distribution of drinking water, blankets and clothes as well as the reconstruction of schools and villages – and granting micro-loans and supply tools and seeds as well as rehabilitation of child soldiers and providing education on human-rights.

Millions of IDP’s and refugees inhabit East and Central Africa – more than five million in Southern Sudan alone.
