In December 2008 the rebel group LRA attacked villages in Norteastern DR Congo. More than 200.000 people left everything behind and fled to escape the brutal attacks.

In 2009 the Danish Refugee Council began working in DR Congo. The programmes primarily targets women and children, as they are especially vulnerable.

Rape has become a strategically used weapon in the conflict. The rape rate in DR Congo is among the highest in the world. Another weapon in the conflict is kidnappings of children. The girls become sex slaves the boys are used as child soldiers.
