Chechnya

In Chechnya, DRC is carrying out a multi-sector assistance programme targeting displaced and conflict-affected population groups. Its focus is on enhancing sustainable recovery, emphasising long term durable solutions. DRC continues (re)integration and recovery activities aimed at improving livelihoods and increasing self-reliance of currently vulnerable populations.

The provided assistance includes meeting permanent housing needs through provision of construction materials and labour. Further, DRC collaborates with local authorities to rebuild physical infrastructure such as roads, water and gas supplies, and buildings for educational purposes.

In acknowledgment of the need for strong local structures, DRC works directly with local NGOs to promote tolerance building, and engage in dialogue with authorities on protection areas of concern.

DRC is also engaged in enhancing economic self-reliance among vulnerable people. This is done through direct assistance to small and medium size businesses and the provision of vocational/business trainings.

The relief assistance in Chechnya, which constituted the major DRC activity during the immediate post conflict humanitarian crisis, is in the final stage of phase out.  DRC however still provide assistance to especially vulnerable individuals (EVIs) and is actively working with local authorities to secure a responsible phase out of school feeding programmes.

The last component of assistance in Chechnya is data collection to inform targeted and timely programming. Legal assistance is provided from five Information Centres in Chechnya, where consultation is given on various displacement related issues and where individuals can register to qualify for assistance according to their entitlements.

DRC liaises closely with local communities and administrations to utilize the gathered information in order to meet humanitarian needs.
