In Georgia, DRC works to improve the living conditions and support local integration of IDPs from the conflicts over Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

In Central and East Georgia, DRC’s programmatic umbrella spans from emergency activities, e.g. basic shelter options, distribution of non-food items, legal aid) to more development and durable solutions oriented ones, including smaller business programs and close engagement at the ministerial level primarily through the Georgian Ministry of Refugees and Accommodation (MRA). The work with the Government of Georgia is centred around issues of return, reintegration and migration management, where DRC provides technical assistance on policy development.

In West Georgia and Abkhazia, DRC has for years had a focus on being present at both sides of the Inguri River, separating Georgia from Abkhazia. In West Georgia, in particular Samegrelo District, DRC rehabilitates private houses and works on the conversion of so-called Collective Centres into private dwellings belonging to IDPs. The conversions are done through extensive dialogue with authorities and by mobilising and capacitating IDPs to actively take part in decisions influencing their life.

In order to boost the economic situation in the IDP dense areas close to Abkhazia, DRC support Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in their role as drivers in the post-conflict economy.

In Abkhazia, the assistance activities targets mostly returnees in Gali District but to strike a balanced approach DRC also renders support to other parts of the war effected areas and economically underdeveloped region.

Operational sectors include shelter rehabilitation (individual houses and apartment blocks), economic self-reliance activities (micro credits, business and self reliance grants and SME support), food-security grants and individual aid to especially vulnerable individuals (EVIs).

Furthermore, DRC supports rehabilitation of community infrastructure via community mobilization projects.
